It all started with a coot s nest Dorothy and Dick meet Tom Dodgeon Port and Starboard and three pirate salvagers all members of the Coot Club Bird Protection Society When one of the coot s nests is disturbed by a shipful of Hullabaloos rude holiday boaters trouble begins Frantic chases calamito. After reading this book I HAD to visit Norfolk and sail a yacht And I did 62 years ago I went with a school party but I was one of the few to fully apreciate the journey because we sailed past all the places mentioned in the story My shipmates did not even notice the black sheep on the lawn of Horning Vicarage or recognise the stump of a windmill as being built in the ruins of St Benets Abbey The mysteries of sailing in narrow waters and knowing how to avoid running aground tricks for getting through Potter Heigham bride were all things I had learned from this book And the knowledge was not appreciated by my older shipmates who had not read it Every mile of river or lake was the place where events in the story had happened thus enhancing my enjoyment of the voyageBut OH DEAR my grandchildren could not be bothered to try to read the book When I tried to encourage to read it they would look up briefly from their smartphones and then be lost again Even the books they HAD been persuaded to read seem to me to very thin on real content and certainly would not provide the wide ranging education provided by Arthur Ransome The Burning The Haunting of Grey Hills knowing how to avoid running aground tricks for getting through Potter Heigham bride were all things I had learned from this book And the Reiki A Comprehensive Guide knowledge was not appreciated by my older shipmates who had not read it Every mile of river or lake was the place where events in the story had happened thus enhancing my enjoyment of the voyageBut OH DEAR my grandchildren could not be bothered to try to read the book When I tried to encourage to read it they would look up briefly from their smartphones and then be lost again Even the books they HAD been persuaded to read seem to me to very thin on real content and certainly would not provide the wide ranging education provided by Arthur Ransome

Coot Club (Swallows and Amazons)

Us boat collisions and near drownings fill the pages of this exciting fifth addition to Ransome s classic children s series This exciting story of the Norfolk Broads is definitely the best Mr Ransome has written It is genuine adventure and yet there is not an incident which could not easily occu. I had not read Coot Club for about 65 years but it is of course just as I remember it The magical Norfolk Broads Arthur Ransome s encyclopeadic knowledge of boats fishing bird watching and his hatred of egg collectors are all there If he were alive today he would make his mark uite possibly as a Green MP The large cast of children is finely drawn each individual being clearly differentiated Of course I m nostalgic but it is still a gripping readfor old and young

READ Coot Club (Swallows and Amazons)

R sailing about the waters of East Anglia Daily Mail There is satisfactory realism about all that happens to the Coot Club and the atmosphere and detail of the odd part of England where they navigate are conveyed with a charm and accuracy that only this author perhaps could bring to bear Guardia. This is my favourite Ransome story I live in Norfolk and have lived near Beccles The Broads are magical and still much as described in the book As I read I can visualise the placesThe story is as enjoyable now as it was 50 years ago when I first read itThank you Arthur Ransome
